Part 2 - Goal Setting

Jump to PDF Course Files

THERE ARE 3 TYPES OF GOALS

Outcome Goals

These typically focus in an event result win/loss many times these types of goals are outside our direct goal.

Performance Goals

These typically focus on an individual performance not taken into account competitors and opposition.

Process Goals

These typically focus on you as the individual. These goals are all in our control.

I believe, and research has proven that the most successful goal setting is to set process goals. Good strong process goals will help you achieve good performance outcomes.

EFFECTIVE GOAL SETTING SHOULD INVOLVE THE 'SMART' SYSTEM
(Bull Albinson & Landers 1995)

  1. Specific ie. To make all my shots count
  2. measurable ie: Feedback stepping into next play phase correctly
  3. Action Oriented ie. Write down goal check
  4. Realistic ie. Within your ability
  5. Timed ie. 1 week, 1 month, 1 year etc

All goals need to be flexible and evaluated as required.

You should share your goals with your coach, team-mates and family. Goals need to be positive.
