EXAMPLES OF ATTENTIONAL FOCUS IN A CRICKET SITUATION
A batsman looks around the field, he assesses where the fielders are positioned, the direction of the wind, the bowler.
All this requires “BROAD EXTERNAL FOCUS”
The batsman may then recall previous experiences with similar field setting and bowling.
This requires “NARROW INTERNAL FOCUS”
The batsman might monitor their tension, imagine the perfect shot, take a deep breath an go through their pre-shot routine.
This requires “BROAD INTERNAL FOCUS”
Finally, the batsman shifts to a “NARROW EXTERNAL FOCUS”, at this time, the batsman’s focus is on the bowler and the ball. This is not the time for other internal cues and thoughts, which would probably interfere with the execution of the shot.
